Biographical / Historical
Franklin J. Schaffner was born in 1920. After graduating from McCaskey High School, Lancaster, in 1938 he attended Franklin and Marshall College where he acted in several Green Room Club plays and graduated in 1942. In the late 1940s Schaffner began his career as a television director, moving into motion pictures in the early 1960s. Schaffner directed several notable films including: Planet of the Apes (1968), Patton (1970) for which he won the Academy Award for best director, Papillon (1973) and Boys from Brazil (1977). Ownership and Custodial History
Between 1971 and 2004, periodic deposits of scripts, screenplays, films, film trailers, photographs, publicity packets, etc. have been received from Franklin J. Schaffner , Jean Schaffner and/or the affiliated production studios, processed, and placed in the Franklin J. Schaffner Collection. Prior to being transferred to the Library’s Archives and Special Collections Dept. between 1983 and 1989, all material had been held in the “Franklin J. Schaffner Film Library” (located in Fackenthal Library) and was curated by F&M Government professor and film-buff Sidney Wise. Additional material consisting of television scripts, Emmy award statuettes, and award plaques were received in 2019 from Franklin J. Schaffner’s daughter Kate Schaffner. This additional material had been in the possession of Jean Schaffner and Jenny Schaffner prior to Kate’s acquisition and donation.
