Biographical / Historical

Francis Lyman Windolph (1889 - 1978) was a prominent Lancaster County (PA) attorney and author. He was a graduate of the Yeates School and Franklin and Marshall College (1908). In 1911, he was admitted to the bar after a three year clerkship. He was first published in a 1908 private printing of "Today and Other Poems." His work gained national attention in 1917 when "Of Names" was published in the Atlantic Monthly. Windolph was also active in his community. He was a member of the Cliosophic Society, the Hamilton Club, the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce and the Pennsylvania Bar Association. He was also the Director of the Lancaster County Public Library for forty years.

Ownership and Custodial History

Complete provenance unknown. Materials were probably donated by Mr. Windolph ca. 1972-1978 during book donations to the library and by bequest. Some of Windolph's published material was solicited from Mr. Windolph and assembled by library staff ca. 1974.
