Summary

This collection consists of biographical, commemorative, and pictorial material on Abraham Lincoln dating from ca. 1865 to the 1950s. Included are articles, pamphlets, postcards, facsimiles, memorabilia, prints, advertising, and news clippings containing information about, or commemorating Lincoln. The collection is particularly strong in Lincoln iconography and lore. Also included is personal correspondence of C.H. Martin, Lancaster Lincoln researcher, and member of the Lincoln Fellowship and Lancaster County Historical Society.

Biographical / Historical

Christian Hess Martin was born on November 28, 1882 in Manor Township, the son of John J. and Anna Hess Martin. After attending Millersville State Teacher's College and Pennsylvania Business College, Martin taught school in Manheim Township from 1901-1908. In 1908 he became a state revenue collector and served in various posts until the early 1930s. Martin had a life long interest in history and joined the Lancaster County Historical Society in 1913. A noted numismatist, collector of Lincolniana, and authority on Abraham Lincoln, he wrote various pieces for the LCHS, and served as its Treasurer from 1935-1955. Martin helped to organize and served as President of the Lincoln Fellowship of Pennsylvania. He was also active as a Manheim Township Justice of the Peace, member of St. Peter's Evangelical and Lutheran Church, member of Society of the War of 1812 and the Sons of the Revolution, and member of the Executive Boards of the Pennsylvania German Society and Pennsylvania Federation of Historical Societies. C.H. Martin died on April 13, 1956.

Collection: Arranged into five principal series: C.H. Martin papers, Lincoln biography, Lincoln commemoratives, Lincoln iconography, and miscellaneous materials. Each series is subdivided into sub series based on the nature of the material.

Ownership and Custodial History

All of the materials in this collection were donated to Franklin and Marshall College's Archives and Special Collections in 2002 by Pamela Nelson. They were collected by her grandfather, C.H. Martin of Lancaster, a member of the Lincoln Fellowship of Pennsylvania. Other materials from C.H. Martin's collection are in the possession of the Lancaster County Historical Society.
